Tau was finally declared fit and available to make his long-awaited return from injury for Egypt club Al Ahly earlier this month, and briefly made his comeback off the bench in a 1-0 win over Aswan.

He has now memorably claimed his second trophy with Al Ahly as he produced a cameo off as a substitute in the 2-0 win over arch-rivals Zamalek on Friday night. For Al Ahly, it was their record-extending 12th Egyptian Super Cup title,

Al Ahly ultimately got the better of Zamalek, thanks to goals from Bruno Savio and Karim Fouad in the 39th and 90th minutes respectively.

After the game, Tau memorably celebrated the occasion as he posted photos of him holding the trophy and with a winner’s medal.

Speaking about this achievement, he admitted it was an extra special feeling after all the struggles he’s endured on the injury front.

“Ja, look, I’m happy we’ve got the cup and what a way to start the season … This one is special because of all the injuries I had last season, so it’s always good to win this one and give back to the fans for their support.”

Tau has undoubtedly reached a key crossroad in his career. The South African has been battling with a wide variety of injuries of late, but remains determined to revive his career at Al Ahly under new coach Marcel Koller.

After all his previous struggles with injury, it’s crucial for the talented playmaker to finally enjoy an injury-free spell, and he will be hoping for a reversal in fortunes as he heads towards the new year.

In what recently served as a timely reminder of just how highly Tau has been regarded in the past, earlier this month he was named in the CAF Team of the Decade for the period between 2010 and 2020 along with Khama Billiat and Denis Onyango.

Can Tau finally rediscover his best form?

For several weeks earlier this year it had been widely reported that Al Ahly were intent on offloading Tau, although it increasingly became clear that there were very few other options available for him.

However, now that he has cleared up his future and remains firmly part of the club’s plans in Egypt, there will be a real hope that the 28-year-old can enjoy a spell of injury-free football.
