Overwhelming majority call for Benni to replace Baxter at Chiefs

The result of a poll clearly shows that supporters want Benni McCarthy to replace Stuart Baxter as the new coach at Kaizer Chiefs.

Last week it was dramatically confirmed that Stuart Baxter – who was in his second stint with Kaizer Chiefs – had been officially shown the door by Amakhosi.

BREAKING: BAXTER AXED BY KAIZER CHIEFS – REPORT

“After a series of meetings, Kaizer Chiefs and coach Stuart Baxter have come to a mutual agreement of an early termination of his contract with immediate effect,” a statement read.

“In his second spell with Kaizer Chiefs, Baxter has led the team in 23 matches (excluding 3 league matches in December 2021). He managed to win 9 matches, draw 6 and lost 8 of the games. The team managed to score 25 goals and concede 23 during that time.

Kaizer Chiefs embarrassingly crashed out of the Nedbank Cup earlier this season, while they have managed just 11 wins from 26 matches in the DStv Premiership to be left stranded in fourth position.

Judging by fan reaction – as reported by The South African website – Amakhosi supporters had quickly growing tired of Baxter, and some even started a petition calling for him to be axed some time ago.

However, there was also mixed reaction on social media following the news on Thursday, with certain supporters suggesting it was not fair for Baxter to be made the scapegoat for the team’s struggles.

MIXED REACTION: SOCIAL MEDIA EXPLODES AFTER BAXTER’S CHIEFS AXING

With conversations already underway over who should be the next man to take on the top job at Amakhosi, The South African ran a poll on Thursday asking readers who they felt should replace Baxter.

Over 1,000 votes were cast, with an overwhelming 65% going in favour of Benni McCarthy, while Arthur Zwane received 16% of the votes, with Pitso Mosimane interestingly receiving just 9%.

Signs have suggested for some time that Baxter could be shown the door by Chiefs

Recently, and somewhat ironically, Baxter recently admitted that he would walk away from the Chiefs job if the club’s hierarchy believed it was the correct decision.

“I don’t have any message to the fans because if they want me to go I’ll go,” Baxter said, as quoted by iDiski Times. If the chairman says to me I don’t think you’re doing a good job then I’ll walk. I’ve got no problem doing that.

“I will walk myself, if I don’t think I’m affecting the team in a positive way, I’ll walk, not a problem. I’m the only coach that has given this club any success in the last 20 years, but I’ve got to go because we dominate the game and lose 1-0? I’ve got to listen to that?

“It’s ok, they’re a fans, they have the right to say exactly what they want. If that reflects what the chairman thinks and what the players think and the majority of our fans think then maybe I should walk.

“But that’s nothing a group of fans will decide, that’s something the football club or I will decide. If I get that feeling, then of course I’ll walk. But at the moment I’m looking at it as a game we should’ve won but we didn’t and that happens in football.”
