Mamelodi Sundowns owner Patrice Motsepe has officially been elected as the new president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

The elective congress was held in Morocco on Friday, March 12 where all African countries and their representatives cast their votes.

Motsepe replaces Ahmad Ahmad, who occupied the position for three years prior to his suspension by FIFA toward the end of 2020.

Motsepe’s rise to the summit of African football comes after the intervention of FIFA president Giovanni Infantino who brokered a deal with three other presidential hopefuls last week.

Senegal’s Augustin Senghor and Ahmad Yahya of Mauritius agreed to the deal brokered by Infantino where they were promised to be Motsepe’s vice-presidents.

Jacques Anouma, who was also vying for the position of CAF president, announced his withdrawal from the race just days after Senghor and Yahya confirmed they will no longer be running for the presidency.

This meant Motsepe would go into the elective congress in Rabat as the only presidential candidate, and he was elected unopposed.

In his 10-point manifesto, Motsepe promised good governance and investment in Africa’s sporting infrastructure among others, and all eyes will now be on whether or not he can deliver during his reign as CAF president.
