Carrick had served as caretaker manager for three matches at Manchester United following the decision to fire Solskjaer after a sequence of disappointing results this season.

Carrick, who was a key member of Solskjaer’s coaching staff and had been criticised by some for remaining at the club following the Norwegian’s dismissal, confirmed on Thursday that he would be walking away.

Man United’s win over Arsenal comes as the club’s new interim manager Ralf Rangnick gets set to formally take over on Friday.

Carrick insisted a number of reasons went into his decision, but did concede that loyalty to Solskjaer was a factor.

We were in a situation where there was a responsibility to see these games through. The loyalty to Ole is a little bit of a factor but there were a lot of things that came into my decision.”

“It’s not been an easy decision to make, but I feel it’s the right one. I was meant to take some time off when I finished playing. I promised my family we’d have some time together and it hasn’t happened! I’ll be back around the place, it’s not like I’m disappearing. It’s just the right time, and what a way to finish.

“I told the players just now – it’s a little bit emotional in the changing room. I held it together, just about!” he added.

He joined the first team coaching staff when he retired in 2018 and served under both Jose Mourinho and Solskjaer.
