Al Ahly and Bafana star Percy Tau will be available for next month’s international friendly against France after recovering from injury.

Tau was unavailable throughout the Club World Cup after suffering a muscle injury during Al Ahly’s 3-0 Egyptian League Cup loss to Smouha in January, but is now notably coming towards the end of his injury rehabilitation.

Last week it was confirmed that Tau had begun to take some part in training, and there is now more good news on that front.

“Percy Tau is recovering well from his quadriceps muscle injury and he will rejoin the team’s full training sessions after our game against Al Hilal of Sudan in Matchday 2 of the CAF Champions League group stage,” club doctor Abu Abla said.

Tau was initially expected to be out for just four weeks

This latest injury news will allay any concerns that Tau could miss South Africa’s upcoming match against France, scheduled to take place in the March international break.

In fact it also means that the 27-year-old should come up against his former club, Sundowns, in the CAF Champions League on 25 February.

With that match in mind, Gaston Sirino will not be available for Sundowns after he suffered a nasal fracture in the Champions League game against Al-Hilal last Friday.

“I am sad because he was really coming back strong and showing good signs, even in training and now we have to lose him in the manner that we did. Fortunately he has already had an operation, and the doctors have predicted that he could be out for two to three weeks,” said co-coach Manqoba Mngqithi.

“We are hoping that maybe when we come back from Al-Ahly he might be in a good space to assist the team going forward. We wish him a speedy recovery because he is a very important member of our team.”
