The career prospects of Mason Greenwood remain under a dark cloud even in the wake of attempted rape and assault charges being dropped against the Manchester United forward after more than a year under investigation.

There is still no clarity over whether he will ever be welcomed back to United, with the club conducting “its own process before determining next steps”.

However, according to UK publication, The Sun, Greenwood will never again be selected for England under the leadership of coach Gareth Southgate.

The youngster hasn’t made an appearance for England since making his debut at the age of 18 against Iceland in 2020, and although he is apparently keen to also revive his international career, this is not currently on the cards.

A source close to the situation was quoted as saying: “He is clinging to the hope of playing again at the highest level. But Southgate places a great deal of importance on not only a player’s talent, but how the squad gels.”

Greenwood has apparently turned down an approach to play for Jamaica

Understandably, there are no international hopes for Greenwood – who is qualified to play for Jamaica on his mother’s side – until he can return to the pitch at club level.

In an update reported on by The Daily Star, the Manchester United internal probe will apparently could go on for several more months, and it’s clear that there is no chance Greenwood will be considered for selection this season.

He remains contracted to United until the middle of 2025, but has not played for the Red Devils since January 22 last year. It’s expected that the club is still looking to ascertain his version of events, and will also get specialists in to assess his mental and physical state.

THERE ARE REPORTS THAT SOME OVERSEAS CLUBS HAVE ENQUIRED ABOUT THE 21-YEAR-OLD

According to an updated article by The Athletic, several options are on the table, ranging from terminating his contract to a possible phased reintroduction of Greenwood to the first team squad.

If he were to remain at the club, United would apparently look to take into account the views of fan groups, sponsors and the United women’s team at varying stages.

The club would also reportedly want Greenwood to take part in rehabilitation, which would involve counselling or therapy. Quite strangely, this may even include facing a TV interview “in which he is challenged on the events that have taken him to this point”.
