Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronaldo can’t stop breaking Champions League records and here is another one!

Manchester United striker  Cristiano Ronaldo has broken yet another record in the Champions League in Tuesday nights 2-0 victory against Villarreal.

Ronaldo broke the deadlock with about 15 minutes to go, to give Manchester United the lead away to Villarreal, in a record breaking goal. 

United under serious pressure

It was always going to be a difficult encounter for Manchester United, who had come from an extremely difficult weekend, straight into the pressured encounter against Villarreal. On Saturday, the Red Devils had suffered a humiliating 4-1 away loss to Watford at Vicarage Road, a defeat that proved to be the final nail in former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s coffin.

Manchester United would then appoint another former long-serving player in ex-midfielder Michael Carrick, to take the reins on an interim basis, on Sunday morning. Having had just half a training session to prepare his charges, after a nightmare weekend, he was able to lead them to an impressive and credible victory over Villarreal.

Villarreal controlled proceedings

As expected, it was the home side Villarreal that controlled proceedings and had the better of the exchanges for the majority of the game. However, having weathered the storm for the better part of the encounter, it would be Manchester United who would shock the home fans with the breakthrough through Ronaldo. 

Another record breaking Champions League goal for Ronaldo

That goal not only proved to be the catalyst for a change in attitude from the Manchester United players, but yet another record breaking goal for Ronaldo in the Champions League. That goal ensured that the five time ballon d’or winner would become the first player playing for an English Premier League club, to score in five opening Champions League games.

Prior to that, Ronaldo had broken the overall Champions League appearances record, as well as most goals scored and assists in the competition too, no wonder they call him ‘Mr Champions League’ . Another popular summer window signing in Jadon Sancho was then also on hand to score his first goal for Manchester United and wrap the points up. They have now qualified for the knock out stages with a game to spare.
