Mamelodi Sundowns go in pursuit of history – the one trophy they have NEVER won!

Mamelodi Sundowns have dominated the DStv Premiership and have even conquered Africa, but have surprisingly NEVER won the MTN8!

Mamelodi Sundowns have dominated the DStv Premiership and have even conquered Africa, but have surprisingly NEVER won the MTN8!

The Tshwane giants may have won four PSL titles in a row but they have never won this tournament,

Since the competition – known today as the MTN8 – started in 2008, it has had nine different champions. None of the winners include The Brazilians, which is somewhat surprising given the magnitude of their recent success.

Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates, SuperSport United, Moroka Swallows, Cape Town City, Platinum Stars, Bidvest Wits, Golden Arrows and Ajax Cape Town are the only sides to have tasted success to date.

It must be noted, however, that the MTN8 has undergone a number of name changes over the years since 1972 when it kicked off as the BP Top Eight Cup.

Mamelodi Sundowns won two BP Top Eight Cup titles (1988 and 1990) as well as the last edition of the SAA Super Eight Cup title in 2007.

Their opponents Cape Town City, secured the trophy back in 2018. Sundowns go in pursuit of a historic first-ever MTN8 triumph today.
