It’s terrible. But why is it now stuck in our heads?

Has this Liverpool fan come up with the 'best worst chant' ever?

We have heard some things in our time. The good, the bad and the ugly of the ‘best worst chant’ competition in football. But Irish Liverpool fan Richy Sheehy might have just outdone all that have gone before him.

Intially shared to his YouTube channel, it soon became the talk of social media, as football pages and bemused onlookers began sharing it across Twitter and Facebook.

Liverpool may have a new terrace anthem…

The chant focuses on Liverpool’s dangerous strike force. Forwards Mohammed Salah, Sadio Mané, and Roberto Firmino are part of Sheehy’s tribute, which also features a sombre acknowledgement of Philippe Coutinho’s departure to Barcelona from the Anfield club last week.

The song itself borrows the chorus of The Archies’ 1960s classic, Sugar Sugar. We find it hard to believe there’s anyone left on this earth who hasn’t heard of this toe-tapping ear-worm…

Or, its subsequent parody on The Simpsons…

New contender for football’s ‘best worst chant’

By now, you’re probably wondering how the song goes. The video is just underneath, but something tells us you might need a translation guide for our Irish crooner. Here’s how the lyrics go:

“Salah! Do doo doodoo doo doo!
“Oh, Mané Mané! Do doo doodoo doo doo!
“Ro-ber-to Fir-mi-nooo… and we sold Coutinho!”

And here is what you’ve all been waiting to see:

New song for the Anfield faithful?

Liverpool are world famous for their catchy, inventive terrace chants. This is by no means a classic of “You’ll Never Walk Alone” stature, but there is an element of charm about it. Dare we say, this has the potential to catch on?

With football songs heading for a dreary, repetitive funk strictly regimented by the White Stripes’ Seven Nation Army chorus, perhaps we need to see more of this? Because there’s one thing for sure. This chant is definitely… unique.
