Kaizer Chiefs new coach: Would Nikola Kavazovic be a good fit for Amakhosi?

He’s basically conducted his own job interview on Twitter…

If the board were choosing their next manager based on enthusiasm alone, then the Kaizer Chiefs new coach would easily be Nikola Kavazovic.

The Serbian has made a series of not-so-cryptic tweets in the last month, which all refer to him wanting to take the reigns at the Soweto giants. He was at it again on Tuesday, sending Chiefs fans into meltdown with this message:

Kavazovic’s current team Township Rollers – the Botswanan champions – beat Mamelodi Sundowns in a friendly earlier this week, and he took the opportunity to send Pitso Mosimane a “see you soon” message.

He has since deleted the tweet, but Kavazovic was referring to the date Chiefs take on Sundowns in the Shell Helix Ultra Cup, a pre-season tournament that takes place in 10 days’ time.

Who is Nikola Kavazovic and what is his record?

He may only be 42 years old, but the Serb has been coaching for the last 20 years. He’s had varying degrees of fortune in his home country and Bosnia, but made a name for himself by finding success where you’d least expect it.

Spells in charge of Tajikistan’s national football team and clubs in Bangladesh, Laos and Maldives built his reputation as a “Mr fix-it” type – he would spend short spells with teams, get them winning and leave within a year.

His current run of 41 games in charge of Township Rollers is the longest he’s been in charge of any club since 2012. In the last year, he’s won the domestic double and guided Rollers to their first ever African Champions League appearance, capped off with their maiden tournament victory against KCCA of Uganda.

Kaizer Chiefs new coach: Is Nikola Kavazovic what they need?

The PSL is a significant step up from any league he’s previously managed in. But he has a history of hitting the ground running, something that could prove to come in handy with a fanbase that demands success.

His 63% win record in all competitions with Township Rollers is not something to be ignored. In his last four domestic club roles, he has won six trophies. Kavazovic is used to winning, and this mentality could be a perfect fit at the Naturena.
