You’re probably expecting to read Amakhosi transfer stories on Deadline Day. Why not take a break, though, to remember a Kaizer Chiefs legend?

Kaizer Chiefs legend of the day: John ‘Shoes’ Moshoeu

Shoes had two spells with the Glamour Boys, either side of a lengthy stint in Turkish football at Istanbul giants Fenerbahçe, among others. This was a trailblazing move, as Bafana Bafana players could envisage a clear pathway for them into European football. Shoes, a midfield maestro of some repute, was known around the globe for his finesse and skill.

Initially a classic number 10 or attacking midfielder, Shoes had the in-game intelligence and technical gifts to perform in any midfield role with distinction. He eventually settled into a deep-lying playmaker role where he would love to dictate the tempo of matches with his vision and class.

Shoes represented South Africa at the 1998 World Cup, two years after proving to be a pivotal part of Bafana Bafana’s success at AFCON 1996. What a player!

Gone, but never forgotten.
