Happy Mashiane has faced the wrath of thousands of infuriated Amakhosi fans after his reckless challenge in the final of the CAF Champions League.

He saw red just before the half-time interval against Pitso Mosimane’s Al Ahly and has seen his fair bit of red from fans too.

Mashiane is just 23 years old, he will learn and grow from this experience. Although reckless we know his passion and drive for the club is immense.

This moment is behind Mashiane and lessons have been learnt, the hard way.

He still has a long and prosperous Chiefs career ahead of him and is a promising young talent with tremendous potential. It is nothing new seeing a young talent let a rush of blood and adrenaline take over.

Recently, Sharks scrumhalf Jaden Hendrikse received a red card after carelessly diving in with an elbow outside the field of play. This was a very similar situation as it ended the competitiveness of what had been a great contest up to that point and Hendrikse had played very well until then.

It was 31-31 all before the red saw the Warren Gatland’s side take over and dominated the last 30, winning 71-31.

A moment that ruined a once in 12-year contest much like Mashiane’s moment ended Chiefs chance at a maiden CAF Champions League.

Mashiane was also solid up until this moment and Chiefs were while in the tie at 0-0 with chances few and far between for both sides.

He has faced a tough week of criticism but is growing through it and I expect him to bounce back stronger and wiser.

Chiefs next step up to take on Orlando Pirates in the Carling Black Label Cup on 31 July.
