When Bafana Bafana went 2-0 up in the first half, proceedings seemed to be following the expected script on Friday night, only for Liberia to snatch a valuable point away from home in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier as they fought back to draw the game.

After letting a sure-fire victory slip through their fingers, Hugo Broos was an understandably frustrated man after the game, but no one could have predicted the chaos that would ensue at the post-match press conference.

The Bafana coach was initially a no-show at the customary media Q&A, instead sending assistant coach Helman Mkhalele to face the music.

However, journalists refused to engage with Mkhalele, with media officer Romy Titus eventually relenting and convincing Broos to show up.

In the end, his presence was barely felt though as Broos refused to go into any details about the result, with the press conference ultimately lasting just a couple of minutes.

Ultimately, although Broos didn’t have much to say, he did say “you have to forgive me today”.

“I will not give any answers on this game. There’s too much disappointment and too much anger in my body,” he commented. “If I say now what I think, it would not be nice. I have always been ready in the past to answer your questions – even difficult questions. But I hope that you understand, that today is for me very difficult to do that. Again, sorry for that. I hope that when you saw the game and saw what happened on the pitch today, you can understand my reaction. Thank you very much.”

Bafana will next travel to Monrovia for the second clash on 28 March 2023.
