The following explanation was provided by Sport Bible in explaining the outcome of the Premier League votes:

“Sir Alex Ferguson’s great strength was that he was able to build several title-winning teams over a number of generations, something no one else has done in the era.

“Amongst his achievements is the incredible Treble winning team in 1998/99, which won the league, Champions League and FA Cup in one season.

“However, many have often believed that the 2008 version, who fell short in the FA Cup, were actually the better team and they’ve been voted the best.

“The double winners, which included the likes of Wayne Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez, have been voted number one, beating the Treble winners as well as the likes of Arsenal’s Invincibles and Manchester City’s ‘centurions.'”
