Daine Klate enjoyed a memorable career at Pirates between 2010 and 2015, which overlapped with the period McCarthy spent there during the latter parts of his career.

Both former players have now gone into coaching, although Klate suffered a setback when he was let go just months into his first head-coaching job at Chippa United.

McCarthy is of course enjoying great success as a first-team coach at Manchester United, but this incredible opportunity came after he also experienced being sacked at Cape Town City and AmaZulu.

This month, Klate was unveiled as a Nedbank Cup ambassador, and spoke about what an example McCarthy ultimately was to others.

“He’s fantastic. We’ve got a good relationship still and I hope to visit him soon,” Klate told News24. “He’s an inspiration. I’m happy for him. He fully deserves it and his work speaks volumes.

“When you’re doubted in one environment, there’s a next environment for you. I find solace in what happened to Benni. Cape Town City stopped believing in him, but he didn’t give up. He went to AmaZulu, who also stopped believing in him, but he didn’t give up.

“Today, Manchester United believes in him and the world believes in him. They’ve got massive global support and for him to do it at that level, you can’t argue with that.”

McCarthy has had an immediate impact at United

At the start of his high-profile role with Manchester United, McCarthy has consistently come in for high praise in relation to his impact since joining the club.

By all accounts, McCarthy has become both a fan and player favourite after it was officially confirmed during the pre-season that manager Erik ten Hag had added to his backroom team with the appointment of the South African soccer legend.

In particular, playmaker Marcus Rashford has spoken of what a positive impact McCarthy has had in the United coaching department, with the 25-year-old having been one of the standout stars throughout this season.

SuperSport’s Julia Stuart recently sat down with Rashford to find out how McCarthy has impacted the Manchester United forwards, and how he’s worked with the striker to improve his game.
