Maguette found himself trending for several weeks all over social media, particularly for his controversial penalty decision that gifted Ghana the win over Bafana Bafana.

FIFA and CAF rule on Maguette’s future

Now after several weeks of debates about his officiating being in the spotlight in that crucial 2022 Qatar World Cup Qualifier, both FIFA and CAF seem to have made a decision on his future in the same week!

The Afcon competition begins early in 2022, with it scheduled to take place in Cameroon from January 9 to February 6. This will be the first time that the tournament features an extension to 24 teams, a fact that will undoubtedly add salt to the wound of South African football fans. Bafana Bafana needed only a draw away to South Sudan in order to qualify for the showpiece but ended up going down 2-0 in March this year.

Double reward for the Senegalese

Although Bafana Bafana will not find themselves on the plane to Cameroon, the same cannot be said about Maguette. According to a list released by CAF, Maguette will be one of the officials that will be used at next year’s showpiece event. These news come in the same week that he was also shortlisted as one of only six African referees that had been shortlisted by FIFA to potentially officiate at the 2022 Qatar World Cup.

Triple delight!

This means that, although he was punished by not being assigned any duties by CAF since that incident, things have generally looked to be on the up for Maguette. Just last week, he would’ve also caught wind of the news that SAFA’s appeal on his officiating had been successfully dismissed by FIFA.
