Newly-appointed Maritzburg United coach Fadlu Davids has reportedly identified ex-Pirates defender Wayde Jooste as a possible recruit.

Earlier this month Fadlu Davids was appointed to the vacant Maritzburg coaching job, and has already begun work in KwaZulu-Natal as he looks to begin turning around the fortunes of the struggling club.

According to SABC Sport, Wayde Jooste has now arrived for assessment, and has been added to Maritzburg’s training squad. However, he hasn’t put pen to paper just yet.

Jooste, who previously worked with Davids at Pirates, is currently a free agent, but could become one of the new players to join Maritzburg if this assessment period goes well while the PSL is on a break during the FIFA World Cup.

To recap the latest developments at Maritzburg, just a few weeks ago Davids took up a position with Lokomotiv Moscow, but that stay was cut short before it even really started after the club underwent major changes.

Davids ultimately returned to South Africa, and then fortunately found an opening available in KZN, with this move representing a stunning reunion for Davids at Maritzburg United, where he enjoyed a storied playing career from 2007 to 2012, while he also previously coached at the KwaZulu-Natal team after retiring.

Davids had previously been without a club since his departure from Pirates at the end of last season, which came after spending three years with the club.

Before the start of the current season, Davids was linked with a number of PSL sides, but none of these moves materialised as he was left without a coaching job for almost three months. However, the 41-year-old then received a career lifeline when Josef Zinnbauer recruited Davids to come work as his assistant at Lokomotiv Moscow

Things did not work out as hoped for Fadlu Davids

Along with drastic changes in the technical team set up of the Russian Premier League side, Zinnbauer was fired alongside sporting director Thomas Zorn and the entire technical team after a string of poor results. As it turned out, Davids then ended up heading home far sooner than expected as the club underwent a “restructure”.
