Just a few weeks ago, ex-Orlando Pirates coach Josef Zinnbauer had opened up on his decision to pick Fadlu Davids as his assistant at Lokomotiv Moscow.

Davids had been without a club since his departure from Pirates at the end of last season, which came after spending three years with the club.

Before the start of the current season, Davids was linked with a number of PSL sides, but none of these moves materialised as he was left without a coaching job for almost three months. However, the 41-year-old then received a career lifeline when Zinnbauer recruited Davids to come work as his assistant.

Things did not work out as hoped for Fadlu Davids

Along with drastic changes in the technical team set up of the Russian Premier League side, Zinnbauer was recently fired alongside sporting director Thomas Zorn and the entire technical team after a string of poor results.

As reported by SABC Sport, Davids has now headed home far sooner than expected as the club undergoes a “restructure”.

Speaking exclusively on Metro FM’s Sports Night Amplified, Davids said he had no regrets despite the failed move.

“If I sit back and reflect…had I got the call now knowing, I would still go. What I got from going there was invaluable. It was extremely the youngest squad in the league by far. We were taking steps in the right direction,” he reflected on his time at Lokomotiv, adding that his coaching credentials have truly open doors in Europe for his career.

“I implore South African coaches, let’s go empower ourselves and get the highest coaching qualification possible because anyone can ask you to join them where they are. But you need the qualifications,” he added.

After heading to Russia, Davids had just followed in the footsteps of Benni McCarthy as the only two South African-born coaches currently flying the country’s flag in Europe.

There are several other South African-born coaches such as Bradley Carnell (USA) and Pitso Mosimane (Saudi Arabia) currently working abroad.
