Liverpool have pulled off a remarkable last-gasp win to keep their slender hopes of a top-four finish alive, with goalkeeper Alisson coming up with the crucial touch.

Alisson came up for the last act of the match, a corner to be taken by Trent Alexander-Arnold, and promptly headed into the back of the West Brom net.

In Liverpool’s entire club history since they were founded in 1892, Alisson is the first goalkeeper ever to score a competitive goal for the club.

Alisson was also on hand moments before to best Robson-Kanu one-on-one when the Wales international collected a knock over the top and threatened his goal.

Liverpool still control their own destiny in tense race

Liverpool would have needed favours from Leicester and Chelsea in their final two games of the campaign had they failed to beat the already relegated Baggies.

The Reds moved one point behind fourth-placed Chelsea and three behind Leicester.

With Leicester and Chelsea still to face off in a repeat of the FA Cup final, won 1-0 by the Foxes on Saturday, victories over Burnley and Crystal Palace will take Liverpool into the top four.

Hal Robson-Kanu had given West Brom the lead in the 15th minute of the contest, but Liverpool hit back with a strike from Mohamed Salah.

Liverpool hit the woodwork twice and both sides had goals ruled out for offside, and it looked like it might be another day of frustration for Klopp’s men.

Try as the might, Liverpool could not get the winner in regulation time despite a flood of chances and the lions share of the ball.

But from Liverpool’s very last opportunity, Alisson went up for a corner and met Trent Alexander-Arnold’s delivery with a magnificently accurate header into the net.
