Percy Tau believes Afcon form will determine his Brighton future

Bafana Bafana star Percy Tau is still in the dark about his future, but believes a gpod showing in the upcoming African Cup of Nations (Afcon) to shed some light about his next destination.

The 24-year-old signed for Brighton and Hove Albion ahead of the 2018/19 season from Mamelodi Sundowns, but was immediately shipped off to Belgium, where he joined up with second tier outfit Royal Union Saint-Gilloise (RUSG).

His performances in the Proximus League have raised fresh interest as to where he will be plying his trade in the 2019/20 season, after being named the league’s Player of the Year earlier in the week.

Speaking on Belgian television, Tau revealed that he thinks he will be sure about his next destination after the continental showpiece event set to be held in Egypt from June.

“I think that will all be decided after the Afcon, which I have in June, but the whole focus at the moment is just at Union to try and finish off the playoffs that we have.”

In 34 matches across competitions in Belgium, Tau has emulated the performances that made his South African soccer’s hottest property, as he has scored a total of 11 goals to go with his 13 assists.

Having helped RUSG secure a play-off spot in the Proximus League by virtue of being placed third with three matches left to play.

Tau also boasts an impressive international record after scoring seven goals for Bafana in 16 appearances, including four strikes in the recently-concluded Afcon qualifiers, with two coming in the crucial finale against Libya in Sfax in March.

Work permit issues have rendered the player unable to turn out in Brighton colours unless the club applies for special dispensation in order to bring him over.

Brighton only just escaped relegation from the English Premier League, as they are placed 17th on the league standings with just a single game left to play.
