The new year begins with an old rivalry in the English Premier League, as a full set of fixtures kicks off 2020.

Arsenal and Manchester United are both resolved to looking for better things after slipping from their high standards of a decade or more ago.

They renew their north/south battle at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday night with the Gunners an unthinkable 12th place in the EPL table, having let a one-goal lead slip at the death on Sunday to lose 2-1 to London rivals Chelsea to make it four without a win.

United have perked up again over the festive period, with a 2-0 success at Burnley last Saturday leaving them fifth and firmly in the hunt for Champions League qualification.

Liverpool have an extra day’s grace in their bid to win a first league title in 30 years, welcoming Sheffield United to Anfield on Thursday.

Jurgen Klopp’s side sneaked past impressive Wolves on Sunday, with a little VAR controversy thrown in, to maintain their 13-point lead at the top of the pile.

The Blades start the new year in eighth after seeing their fine unbeaten run brought to a halt by Manchester City last weekend.

Reigning champions City have a return to second place in their sights as they host much-improved Everton on New Year’s Day.

Pep Guardiola’s men are a point behind Leicester having won three in four, ahead of their clash with a Toffees side unbeaten in five since parting company with boss Marco Silva.

Leicester ended a run of three winless matches with a win at West Ham last time out, with another trip to Newcastle now lying in wait for the Foxes.

The Toon Army suffered a pair of defeats over the festive period, nevertheless leaving them a creditable 11th at the turn of the year.

It had been looking like a bleak midwinter for Frank Lampard’s Chelsea, too, until their late turnaround at rivals Arsenal secured a vital three points to keep them solidly fourth in the table.

The Blues now go to Brighton, who ended a troubling winless run with victory over Bournemouth at the Amex Stadium on Saturday to pull away from relegation trouble.

Southampton are also edging towards safety after Saturday’s home draw with Crystal Palace made it seven points from nine for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side, who now face the challenge of Tottenham at St Mary’s Stadium.

Spurs start 2020 in sixth after scrambling to secure a 2-2 draw at bottom side Norwich.

West Ham have a returning face at the helm as their expensively-assembled squad kick off the new year a point and a place above the drop zone.

Boss David Moyes has a crunch clash first up as the Hammers face fellow strugglers Bournemouth at a fraught London Stadium.

Norwich need points sharpish if they are to haul themselves off the foot of the EPL table, with in-form Crystal Palace the visitors to Carrow Road on Wednesday.

Nigel Pearson has engineered an upturn in fortunes since being appointed Watford boss, with the Hornets making it seven points from nine at the weekend thanks to a handsome 3-0 victory at home to relegation rivals Aston Villa.

Watford bring in the new year at Vicarage Road at home to seventh-placed Wolves.

Villa, meanwhile, face an all-Claret clash with Burnley at Turf Moor on Wednesday lunchtime.

The home side have lost two on the bounce to slip into the bottom half of the Premier League table, while the Villans sit a point adrift of safety.
