Cristiano Ronaldo leaving Man United was the best thing that could happen to Marcus Rashford

When Cristiano Ronaldo left Man United, it liberated Marcus Rashford and another key young attacking star at Old Trafford.

Rashford liberated in the absence of Cristiano Ronaldo

With his match-winning strike in Saturday’s Manchester Derby, 25-year-old England star Rashford became the first United player since Cristiano Ronaldo himself in April 2008 to find the net in seven consecutive appearances. All told, Rashford has 16 goals and six assists from 26 appearances this term.

“Rashy” has been almost unplayable at Old Trafford specifically, scoring in nine consecutive matches at the Theatre of Dreams. Teddy Sheringham was the last player to do that, all the way back in the year 2000.

Rashford looks like a player reborn. He’s always been an attacker who thrives on confidence, and right now he’s flying high and can do no wrong. It’s difficult not to deduce that Rashford is enjoying the extra responsibility handed to him with Ronaldo having left the club. There’s also just more space, literally and figuratively, for him to be himself and feel more comfortable.

Man United flying high ahead of trip to Arsenal

Broadly speaking, United are one of the most in-form teams across the whole of Europe. They’ve won seven matches on the bounce post-World Cup, and they’ve won eight in a row if you include a last-gasp success at Fulham just before Qatar 2022. Alejandro Garnacho was the match-winner that day, and it was the teenage Argentinian who supplied Rashford’s winner on Saturday, making him the youngest player ever to assist a goal in an EPL Manchester Derby. Garnacho is clearly another beneficiary of Ronaldo’s exit, and he’ll ne eyeing a start against the Gunners on Sunday. It should be a cracker.
