For many local football fans, they will fondly remember the video of young Mateo Manousakis leading out the Cape Town City team, brilliantly joining in the classic Umshini Wami chant. A few years later, it has now been spotted by Rashford on social media.

At the time, the youngster’s father, Vasil Manousakis, was the assistant coach of the club, and his son became an iconic figure at the team.

The video happened to pop up on social media this past weekend, and caught the eye of Rashford, the England and Manchester United superstar.

His comment on social media has drawn over 31,000 likes (and counting), while it has been retweeted over 3,000 times.

Another former England football star, Gary Lineker also responded to say it was “fabulous”.

Back then, it became something of a tradition at CTC FC to have the players led out of the tunnel by the young Manousakis.

“I didn’t expect it at all. He’s always showed an interest in football, even back when he was four or five and came down to training when I was at FC Cape Town,” Valis once said about his son in a 2018 IOL News article

“But I think, here at City, it’s just the amazing team spirit that took him in; he has the love and respect from the players, he can feel it, it’s real, and they always want to see him.”
