Manchester City star Kevin De Bruyne has wished the Mamelodi Sundowns U15 team good luck as they get set to take part in the KDB Cup youth tournament, which kicks off this weekend.

Back in February it was confirmed that the Mamelodi Sundowns’ U15 side will become the first African team to participate in this year’s KDB Cup, with this historic move having been facilitated by Roc Nation Sports International, the world-renowned sports agency that represents De Bruyne.

Sundowns set for sixth edition

The sixth edition of the immensely popular two-day event will take place this Saturday and Sunday, and the Mamelodi Sundowns youth squad has already arrived in Belgium to begin preparations.

Earlier this year, the draw for the popular tournament in Belgium was conducted, with Mamelodi Sundowns listed in Group A alongside last year’s winners FC Barcelona as well as Manchester City.

Meanwhile, Group B includes Bayern Munich, Palmeiras and Odense. Group C is made up of Paris Saint-Germain, RB Leipzig and Club Brugge, while Group D has Real Madrid, Ajax Amsterdam and KAA Gent.

De Bruyne proud

De Bruyne has proudly associated his name with the KDB Cup ever since the inaugural edition took place in 2016, and the 31-year-old – who recently won both the English Premier League and FA Cup with City – took the time this week to welcome the Mamelodi Sundowns youth team and wish them well on the eve of the tournament.

“The KDB Cup is around the corner, and as we celebrate the tournament going truly global, I would like to send a message of welcome to the Mamelodi Sundowns youth team as they touch down in Belgium. It’s going to be super exciting to have the first African team participating in the tournament, and I’m sure it will be a wonderful experience for all involved.

“It was fantastic to recently see the Mamelodi Sundowns senior team winning the South African league title for the sixth season in succession, and so there is no doubt that the U15 players are all in the right place at one of the leading clubs in Africa, with a great future ahead of them. Good luck to the U15s this weekend!”
