Kaizer Chiefs backed up their Soweto Derby win with a scrappy 1-0 win over Richards Bay in a match with two key moments.

It was a crunch encounter for the Glamour Boys as they travelled to face the Natal Rich Boyz at King Zwelithini Stadium.

Chiefs needed to send a statement to their rivals that they are able to string a few results together and challenge for second place.

Hunting second place

Of course, the league is done and dusted with Mamelodi Sundowns clear winners. But Chiefs can still reach the CAF Champions League by finishing second.

Their 1-0 win over Richards Bay means that the surprise package from the coast are now three points behind Chiefs and Orlando Pirates and five back of SuperSport United, who are second.

Chiefs’ latest victory helped them keep pace with the Buccaneers and stay two back of second place. It’s a crucial result given that the Soweto pair have played one more match than their Pretoria rivals.

It was Kaizer Chiefs first back-to-back league wins since 31 October 2022.

So much has been written of the potential of Mduduzi Shabalala and he proved it after eight minutes. A pin-point cross was powered home by Siyabonga Ngezana.

It was a goal that settled down Chiefs and allowed them to dictate play.

The match turned on its head 10 minutes later when goalkeeper Salim Magoola was shown a straight red card. Under-pressure and outside of his box, the Richards Bay shot-stopper was into a mistake.
