Pitso Mosimane once again rose to the occasion as he guided his Al Ahly side to a dominant win over Zamalek in Africa’s biggest derby.

Pitso Mosimane once again rose to the occasion as he guided his Al Ahly side to a dominant win over bitter rivals Zamalek in Africa’s biggest derby on Friday.

Mosimane’s men beat defending champions Zamalek 5-3 at the Cairo International Stadium to remain unbeaten and take a handy early lead over their bitter rivals in this season’s Egyptian Premier League.

Al Ahly took the lead in the 16th minute thanks to an own goal by Zamalek goalkeeper Mohamed Abougabal.

Ali Maaloul doubled their lead from the penalty spot in the 20th minute before Mohamed Sherif added a third in the 25th minute, giving Al Ahly a 3-0 lead at the half-time break.

Mostafa Fathi pulled a goal back for Zamalek in the 52nd minute only for Al Ahly to restore their three-goal advantage through Aliou Dieng a minute later.

Ali Maaloul scored his second of the match – and Al Ahly’s fifth – once again from the penalty spot in the 63rd minute.

To their credit Zamalek finished the stronger side and narrowed the deficit thanks to an 81st minute penalty by Ahmed Sayed and a final goal in the 90th minute by Achraf Bencharki.

However, they ran out of time as Al Ahly emerged victorious.

Percy Tau started the match but failed to trouble the scorers and was substituted in the 68th minute.

Post-match Al Ahly took to social media to hail their coach.

Al Ahly moved atop the standings on goal difference after their third win from as many matches this season, while Zamalek dropped to fifth in the log.

Pitso Mosimane’s side will next be in action on Friday, 19 November at home against Al Mokawloon at 20:00 SA time.
