Al Ahly coach Pitso Mosimane made a bold statement about his tenure at Mamelodi Sundowns while also taking the opportunity to have a go at their current coaches.

Pitso Mosimane’s Al Ahly sent Sundowns crashing out of the 2020/21 CAF Champions League on Saturday with a 3-1 aggregate score. The result was marred, however, by the antics of Sundowns fans who hurled insults at their former coach, while also vandalising the bus of the Egyptian giants en route to the stadium.

Mosimane reminds Sundowns about his role in their success

In his post-match press conference, the outspoken Mosimane was never going to miss the opportunity to savour his moment, with the visibly emotional coach making sure the Sundowns faithful remember his contribution to the clubs’ success over the past decade. Mosimane told journalists that he effectively built the success the current Sundowns side is enjoying, alone, during his eight-year tenure at the club.

He then aimed a dig at Sundowns coaches

In the same sentence, he couldn’t resist having a sly dig at the three coaches Sundowns appointed as his successors Manqoba Mngqithi, Rhulani Mokwena as well as the experienced Steve Komphela. Mosimane seemed to question the trio’s tactical prowess too, making his feelings known about their decision to substitute the duo during the crucial quarter-final second-leg on their home turf.

Many have since come to the defence of Mosimane

Many stakeholders have since condemned the actions of the Sundowns fans for their antics towards the Al Ahly bus as well as Mosimane himself. The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) political party, as well as Sundowns, issued out a statement, confirming their displeasure at what had occurred

“Coach Pitso is an exceptional African coach who has taken a new challenge and is already flying the SA flag high. He has done good for SA soccer and is among the best football coaches in African continent and the world,” said the EFF in a statement.

“As such‚ for coach Pitso‚ management‚ and his players to require such an escort is distasteful. Sundowns has shown the highest form of self-hate horrendous to watch; worse Pitso Mosimane’s mother was dragged into verbal assault that was obviously premeditated to bring Mosimane.

“He built Sundowns and won all possible trophies‚ and if anything‚ Sundowns should be celebrating him.”

In a viral video on social media, Mosimane also claimed to have knowledge of the person behind the attack.

“I said to myself, what else should I have done for this team to get respect. But it’s football, I understand. And I know the person who orchestrated it,” he said.
