Homesickness is a normal feeling, and Percy Tau might feel a big dollop of it when his Al Ahly side faces Mamelodi Sundowns in the CAF Champions League this weekend.

It’s been a long and winding road since Bafana Bafana attacker Percy Tau left Mamelodi Sundowns for the Premier League with Brighton in 2018. He’s since also enjoyed stints in Belgium, including a glittering Champions league night against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu. He’s been plagued with inconsistency and injuries though, and only scooped two major pieces of silverware since leaving Downs.

Sundowns head coach Rhulani Mokwena is desperate for his side to go all the way in this competition with Downs cruising in the PSL, despite a 1-1 draw at the weekend against Stellenbosch. If they can win here in Tshawne against Al Ahly, they’ll go a long way to eliminating one of the biggest sides on the continent. They’d likely advance alongside Sudanese giants Al Hilal. Historically speaking, Al Ahly have faced South African teams 13 times in CAF competitions on South African soil. They’ve yet to win a game here.

Ka Bo Yellow vs Al Ahly at Loftus Versfeld Stadium kicks off at15:00 on Saturday. See you there! Will Percy Tau feel a sense of regret when the final whistle blows? One thing is for sure, Al Ahly’s number 23 will receive a warm reception.
