Orlando Pirates succumbed to a 3-2 defeat against Libya’s Al Ittihad on Sunday evening in their CAF Confederation Cup group stage clash.

The hosts opened the scoring in as early as the 14th minute through Sanad Al-Warfali whose expert freekick beat Siyabonga Mpontshane.

It didn’t take long for Orlando Pirates to level though with Bandile Shandu scoring a beauty of a goal (highlights below) in the 26th minute.

Al Ittihad quickly restored their advantage thanks to a stunning Eisay strike in the 27th minute however Shandu was on hand to grab his brace on the stroke of half-time with a tap-in.

Al Ittihad then sealed the victory in the second half through Omar Al Khouja. There was no coming back for Orlando Pirates who’ll make the long trip back home without anything to show for their travels.

Davids wary of Al Ittihad strengths!

“Our analysts have already done the work and we already have some details in relation to the team.” – Orlando Pirates co-coach Fadlu Davids told reporters.

“They are definitely a better team so far if you compare them to JS Saoura that we faced, so they are really a tough opponent that we face.

“What is familiar is that it is the same stadium that we played last season, Aal Ahly Benghazi, so we know where we are going, we know the type of pitch, it is an artificial pitch.

“It is just now to finalize the finer details of the team and how they play, how Orlando Pirates can approach the game but it will definitely be a tough game coming up.

“We know our issues in the first round. This is really the first time now that we have 95% – 98% of player availability. Everyone is back and fighting. You can see the difference in training where everybody is there fighting,”
