The Brazilians failed to qualify for the semi-finals of the continental competition for a third consecutive season as they were stopped by Petro de Luanda on Saturday.

Sundowns lost 3-2 on aggregate to Petro, and Mngqithi believes his side was better in the 1-1 draw at the FNB Stadium on the day.

However, he admitted that being better without scoring goals doesn’t count in football because Sundowns needed to score goals to advance.

Furthermore, Mngqithi said the CAF Champions League is unlike the PSL, adding that one or two stupid mistakes can prove costly in the CAF inter-club competition.

Nonetheless, Mngqithi believes the Sundowns leadership should take the blame for the team’s exit in the competition for not achieving the ultimate goals.

MAMELODI SUNDOWNS LEADERSHIP MUST TAKE THE BULLET – MANQOBA MNGQITHI

“It’s hurting too much. I still believe our team was the better team on the day but unfortunately, that doesn’t count if you don’t put balls in the back of the net,” said Mngqithi.

“In the CAF Champions League, unlike in the PSL, you make one or two stupid mistakes, you get punished. The goals we conceded in Angola were all very bad goals.

“We were a bit unfortunate that we didn’t qualify for the semi-finals but I think the boys gave a good account of themselves,” he said.

“It’s probably us, as the leadership, that will have to take the bullet and say, ‘maybe we need to plan and do better in the next coming matches and make sure that we improve in this space’, because seemingly, we’re not achieving our ultimate goals,” concluded Mngqithi.
