And Gavin Hunt has experienced campaigners who previously participated in the tournament and can help Amakhosi get past the group stages.

Leonardo Castro, Ramahlwe Mphahlele, and Khama Billiat did it with Mamelodi Sundowns but there are six other players the coach can pin his hopes.

These are the players who were present the last time Chiefs participated in the CAF Champions League in 2016, and are still with the team.

ITUMELENG KHUNE

Khune has played many CAF Champions League matches with Amakhosi before, and he was the captain in the club’s last participation in the tournament in 2016.

He will get to taste continental football at this stage for the first time in his 14 years as the club’s No.1.

ERICK MATHOHO

After arriving in 2012 from Bloemfontein Celtic, Tower got to be part of African football with Amakhosi in 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2016 as Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns dominated domestic football.

He is still standing although he will miss the clash against Horoya through injury.

KGOTSO MOLEKO

Moleko arrived at the same time as Mathoho and he has been ever-present for the Glamour Boys in the CAF Champions League.

He will miss this Group C opener due to family commitments but he should be available for the other five matches Chiefs will play.

DANIEL CARDOSO

Kaizer Chiefs

Cardoso’s first taste of continental football came in 2016 as Chiefs crashed out in the early stages of the CAF Champions League.

He now gets the opportunity to help Amakhosi reach the knockout stages.

WILLARD KATSANDE

Kaizer Chiefs Chippa United PSL

A stalwart in domestic football! This is probably Katsande’s last chance at making his name in the CAF Champions League as he’s in the twilight of his career after failing to do so in the previous editions because Chiefs couldn’t reach the group stages.

BERNARD PARKER

Parker brings with him a wealth of experience, and after his team’s not-so-impressive run in the CAF Champions League in the past, the midfielder knows he may never get this rare opportunity again in his career.

Now, will the six players stand up and be counted for Amakhosi this year?
