And while reports have suggested Amakhosi need to beat Horoya AC at all cost to progress to the quarter-finals, that’s not entirely true.

And here is why…

Chiefs are currently placed third on the Group C log with eight points from five group stage matches – and they are tied on points with second-placed Horoya whom they face on Saturday.

The reason they are placed third is because of Horoya’s superior goal difference.

As things stand, Chiefs are on a minus one (-1) goal difference while Horoya are on a plus one (+1), but that’s not how the two teams will be ranked after the final matches of the group stages.

CAF uses head-to-head to instead of goal difference to determine who advances provided two or more teams are tied on points.

So, all Chiefs need to do is to at least get a score draw in Guinea to be guaranteed of a place in the quarter-finals of the CAF Champions League.

And that’s because Amakhosi and Horoya played to a 0-0 draw in the first leg at the FNB Stadium, meaning Gavin Hunt’s men would have scored away from home, and that will be enough for Chiefs.

In head-to-head stats, both Chiefs and Horoya are tied on everything as per CAF head-to-head rule – and that is:

  • Points in head-to-head matches among tied teams.
  • Goal difference in head-to-head matches among tied teams.
  • Goals scored in head-to-head matches among tied teams.

Now, there’s a fourth condition in the head-to-head rule, and that’s AWAY GOALS SCORED IN HEAD-TO-HEAD MATCHES AMONG TIED TEAMS.

And that’s where Chiefs should capitalize on come Saturday night by at least scoring a goal or two and ensure they don’t lose the match.

The match in Conakry is scheduled for 9PM SA time.
