Former Kaizer Chiefs captain Fabian McCarthy is confident his former club can get past the group stages of the CAF Champions League.

This despite being Amakhosi’s first time in the group stages where they have been drawn alongside the likes of Wydad Casablanca, Horoya AC, and Petro de Luanda in Group C.

According to McCarthy, Chiefs should at least fight for a point away from home in each of their away games and win at home to make things easier for themselves.

Chiefs have already dropped two valuable points at home following Tuesday’s goalless draw against Horoya.

Nonetheless, McCarthy is aware that the memories of last season where Chiefs missed out on the league title could still haunt them.

“Look, this one is a big one. It’s going to set a trend for the whole group stages,” said McCarthy in an interview with Vodacom Soccer.

“If they can pull this one off… even a draw, I think it’s going to be good enough away from home and win at home.

“Because that thing of last season is still on their mind. So, I think this is a big thing for Chiefs but I have confidence and I think they can go through the group stages and compete,” added McCarthy.

Amakhosi are three points behind Group C leaders Horoya, who beat Petro de Luanda in their opening match of the group stages last week.

Up next for Chiefs is a visit to Wydad whom they will face in Burkina Faso on February 28.
