Thapelo Morena’s 85th-minute strike proved the difference between the two sides as Mamelodi Sundowns came away with all three points at the Cairo International Stadium.

The win saw the Brazilians move to the top of the group with seven points after three matches – the halfway mark for the Tshwane giants.

Al Ahly remain in third place with just one point, albeit with a game in hand.

Sudan side Al-Merrikh are in second place with four points, also after just two matches, while their compatriots Al-Hilal are currently fourth and last with a single point having played three matches.

Only the top two finishers in each of the four groups will progress to the quarter-finals.

Al Ahly will host Al-Merrikh on Saturday, 5 March in what is already looming as a must-win match for Pitso Mosimane’s defending Al Ahly champions.

Kick-off is at 21:00 SA time.
