Towards the end of March, Benni McCarthy was dramatically let go by AmaZulu despite there still being several games left in the season.

The famous former Bafana Bafana star has not spoken out much since his departure from AmaZulu, but has increasingly begun to emerge in the public domain.

Taking to social media in a debate around players who battled to live up to their potential, he name-dropped Anthony Christen -also known as ‘Money Eyes’ – as well former PSL journeyman Junaid Hartley.

“Ive played with both Money Eyes and Junaid Hartley, two naturally gifted players wit incredible skills but Money Eyes was Ronaldinho level. For me the biggest waste of talent ever,” he stated.

Although McCarthy has been linked with several clubs, it’s now been confirmed that he’s headed to England on somewhat of an exploratory trip, which will include visits to English Premier League outfit Brentford FC and possibly Crystal Palace later this month.

Benni holds a UEFA Pro License, and according to SABC Sport, the visits are part of expanding his knowledge.

“Obviously I want to take the time while I’m this side of the world because the access it’s much easier for me, when you are here travelling down to England visiting clubs and stuff like that you know, so I’ve spoken with people at Brentford FC.

“I just need to confirm a day because obviously they played Man U (on Monday) so I’ll probably be looking at Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday’s week you know I will go down to West London to go and visit at Bentford and obviously have a lunch with head coach Thomas Frank.”

Benni McCarthy suggested the Brentford visit is also a fact-finding mission of sorts

“What they get to work with and what the difference is between why they are where they are and why we in South Africa we still falling short.

“But as branded that we are a demanding country and we wanna improve, we wanna be there, but look you have to look at facts Mamelodi Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs and Pirates, now Baroka FC that has proper proper, the old cape town Ajax they have training facility where players come in the morning where it’s like a top professional set up.

“Players come in the morning and they have breakfast and you have everything to your disposal and players go out and go on have their own training facility, their own training pitches where they can train and work on the craft and become better and then afterwards the club is looking after you…. all that plays a huge part in players development and country.”
