Arguably South Africa’s greatest ever footballer, McCarthy was recently crowned DStv Premiership Coach of the Season after leading Usuthu to a second-place finish in the 2020/21 DStv Premiership season.

The 43-year-old also won the PSL’s top coaching award during his time at Cape Town City FC with whom he won the MTN8 title.

Former Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane is in charge of Zamalek’s fierce rivals Al Ahly.

And Benni McCarthy says he would jump at the chance to take the reins at a club of Zamalek’s stature and pit his wits against ‘Jingles’.

“If I ever get the chance of coaching in Egypt, especially a big team like Zamalek that have fantastic players and I think they are as equally good as Al Ahly,” McCarthy told former Ajax Amsterdam team-mate Ahmed Mido on his television show ‘The Changing Room’.

“So if you coach Zamalek you should be able to contest with Al Ahly.

“Hopefully, Mido has the power to make me the coach of Zamalek one day because I would love to have that kind of duels, to coach a very strong team against Pitso Mosimane’s Al Ahly.”

Zamalek currently lead Al Ahly at the top of the Egyptian Premier League standings by a whopping 17 points, although Al Ahly have seven games in hand over their arch-rivals due to their Al Ahly’s Club World Cup and CAF Champions League commitments.

Al Ahly advanced to the CAF Champions League final for a second consecutive season where are scheduled to face Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday, 17 July in Casablanca.

Benni McCarthy, who recently missed out on the opportunity to coach Bafana Bafana, played 79 matches for the national team, scoring a record 31 goals.
