Recently, midfielder Kamohelo Mokotjo was linked with a possible move back to SuperSport United, but ultimately nothing materialised. As it stands, the 31-year-old ex-Matsatsantsa, Brentford FC and Feyenoord player is currently a free agent after leaving MLS side FC Cincinnati, while he has now spoken glowingly of Chiefs during a wide-ranging interview.

Mokotjo had been training with another former club, FC Twente, where he aimed to potentially land a contract, but an injury scuppered these plans.

“I had a set back with my knee. I was cleared two weeks ago and I am completely fit at the moment,” said Mokotjo in an exclusive interview on Metro FM, as quoted by SABC Sport.

When answering further questions, the 31-year-old – who has played for a host of teams overseas – said he’d certainly be willing to consider a return to South Africa.

“Chiefs has a good history. I played against them a lot in the youth and they were very intimidating. But there’s not much I can say, I see they are building. It’s a wonderful club and it deserves more. So, I would be open to that,” he said when Amakhosi would be an appealing destination.

“I think I would consider that. It’s not really something to be scared of because I know I have my footballing quality – the best aspect of me is my mind, my mentality. I know there’s a lot I would change because I have obviously played in different countries.

“I have the experience, and that also teaches you to know what to expect in games and at certain clubs. But I also know how to stay grounded and keep two feet on the ground at all times. Football is an evolving game, I am ruling out nothing at the moment.

“Money is important, but it is not the most important thing. What I want to do is, if the opportunity presents itself, I want to go where there’s a winning mentality. I want to enjoy my football and my home country,” Mokotjo concluded.

Mokotjo has 23 Bafana Bafana caps to his name in all competitions, although it will be interesting to see whether he could force his way onto the Chiefs’ radar.

It’s already been a tough start to the new season for Kaizer Chiefs, who were beaten convincingly by bottom-of-the-table Cape Town City FC in their DStv Premiership clash at the Cape Town Stadium on Tuesday evening.

Meanwhile, Kaizer Chiefs lost for the third time in five matches to heap early pressure on new coach Arthur Zwane as the Glamour Boys slipped to 10th place in the log. Amakhosi have also lost all three of their DStv Premiership games away from home
