Bafana Bafana face Zimbabwe in WCQ action

South Africa hosts Zimbabwe in matchday four of World Cup qualifying looking to claim three priceless points at Free State Stadium. Bafana played out a 1-1 draw with Nigeria’s Super Eagles last time out, taking their points tally in qualifying to four. Group C is congested and currently led by surprise packages Benin. Hugo Broos’ side beat Benin on matchday 1 but have struggled in subsequent matches. Bafana vs Zimbabwe kicks off at 18:00 on Tuesday 11 June and will be televised live on SABC 2.

Striking dilemmas?

The major talking point after Hugo Broos named his 23-man squad for crunch World Cup qualifiers against Nigeria and Zimbabwe was the omission of Tshegofatso Mabasa. The Orlando Pirates man scored 16 goals in the DStv Premiership and won the Golden Boot. Broos preferred his clubmate Evidence Makgopa in the preliminary group, and that was also the case in Pirates’ recent Nedbank Cup final win over Sundowns. Bucs head coach Jose Riveiro opted for the most physical, channel-running approach of Makgopa. It paid dividends. 23-year-old Makgopa was a key component of the Bafana side which won bronze at Afcon 2023. However, he hasn’t made the final squad here. Bafana’s attackers are Themba Zwane, Iqraam Rayners, Percy Tau, Oswin Appollis, Elias Mokwana, Relebohile Mofokeng, Patrick Maswanganyi and Lyle Foster.

Bafana outcast set for Middle East move?

According to Soccer-Laduma, Middle Eastern clubs are interested in 27-year-old Tshegofatso Mabasa. He’s fresh off a Golden Boot winning season after bagging 16 goals in the league.

“Given Mabasa’s rich goal-scoring form this season, it is no surprise that he is the subject of widespread interest, particularly from Saudi Arabia. According to well-placed Siya sources, enquiries have been pouring in for the striker from the Gulf Region and from a few leagues in Europe. The Buccaneers face an uphill battle in holding onto their star man, as he continues to garner interest. The next few weeks ought to be interesting for Mabasa in terms of his future and where he will be playing his football next season,” wrote the publication.
