Mokoena scored his second goal of the World Cup Qualifiers for Bafana Bafana to further strengthen their lead in Group G.

Good result, not so much the performance

Although the result was positive, it was not exactly a polished performance from Bafana Bafana who looked sluggish in possession for the majority of the fixture. Coach Hugo Broos came out after the game to also admit that, despite Mokoena’s goal, the team lacked aggression, which is something that left him bamboozled.

Broos also lamented that Bafana Bafana were perhaps fortunate to have not conceded with Zimbabwe having stitched together better possession and some goal scoring chances. Nevertheless, Mokoena’s strike would prove to be enough to put the team three points clear and in a commanding position in their quest for World Cup qualification.

After the match, Mokoena told the media that him scoring was actually part of a conversation he had with roommate and former junior national team captain Tercious Malepe

Mokoena discusses his goals

“Funnily enough, me and my roommate Tercious (Malepe) were talking about it before the game that my goals take us to the next round,” Mokoena said.

“At the (2019 U23 Africa Cup of Nations), my goal [against Ivory Coast] took us to the knockout stage, which took us to the Olympics.”So, we were talking about that before the game and when I scored that goal… You know you are full of emotions and you are happy.I was thinking about it, ‘ah, life is very weird, now I was playing Olympics, now we’re about to take our country to World Cup.’ It’s very amazing.” Continued Mokoena.

What Bafana Bafana need

Bafana Bafana now take on Ghana in their last match of the group phase of qualifying. Broos’s charges know that a win or draw is all they require to go through to the play-off stage. How the team could benefit from another Mokoena goal then.
