Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rhulani Mokwena has backed Gaston Sirino to do a job for Bafana Bafana.

The 32-year-old Uruguayan striker has been in South Africa since 2018 and has received his citizenship.

He has been an important player for the Brazilians over the past few seasons, scoring 36 goals and creating 41 in 170 appearances in all competitions.

Mokwena is a huge admirer of the former Bolivar frontman and feels he could add quality to the South African national team.

‘I’d be happy to represent South Africa’ – Gaston Sirino

Speaking after his side’s goalless draw with Swallows at Dobsonville Stadium last Sunday, Mokwena said on TimesLIVE: “If he has the things [meets the criteria] and everything is possible I think he can add value, of course.

“But I don’t select the national team. That’s the hard part – there are so many good players in this country.

“I don’t even think if there’s a good player available it should be a discussion.”

Sirino has previously told Sundowns Magazine: “I have had a great time in this beautiful country. I love everything about it and if I get presented with the chance to don the national team colours I would jump at the opportunity, but the decision does not rest with me.

“There is no player born in South America who has played for Bafana Bafana and if I receive the call I would be happy to represent this beautiful nation.”
