Having been initially named in the South Africa squad for friendlies against Guinea (Friday, 25 March) and France (Tuesday, 29 March), Tau was ruled out of the squad over the long weekend.

The reason behind his omission was reported to be an injury he suffered during Al Ahly match against Sudan’s Al-Merrikh in the CAF Champions League last Friday.

Tau opened the scoring for Al Ahly in the 19th minute in their 3-1 win, but was substituted at half-time.

Hugo Broos said Percy Tau needs a 6-month break

According to the Kingfut website, Shobeir suggested that Tau ‘has issues’ with current South Africa head coach Hugo Broos, especially after the latter claimed that Tau needs a “six-month break from football”.

“South Africa head coach excluded Tau from his squad and he seems to be angry with the player,” Shobeir said.

“Percy Tau doesn’t seem to want to play for South Africa with Broos as head coach as well.

“After excluding Tau, Broos made a statement, claiming that the player needs a six-month break.

“That was strange, especially since Tau was one of his most important players.”

If true, it would represent a sad state of affairs as Broos is unlikely to be going anywhere soon and Tau remains one of South Africa’s most lethal weapons when fit and on form.
