FIFA received a formal complaint from the South African Football Association (SAFA) after the controversial 2022 Soccer World Cup qualifier, which saw Senegalese referee Maguette Ndiaye award a dubious penalty to Ghana.

That penalty proved to be the difference as Ghana went on to clinch the top spot in the group and advance to the play-off round, while the result dashed Bafana Bafana’s World Cup dreams.

However, SAFA, through CEO Tebogo Motlanthe, immediately said it would lodge an official complaint with FIFA to have the match replayed.

At a press briefing on Wednesday, SAFA president Danny Jordaan highlighted concerns over betting on the game, revealing that they want FIFA to investigate if there were betting spikes before the penalty was given.

“We were concerned with specific incidents in the game and informed that we’ll lodged a match-manipulation complaint. Match manipulation is when there is unlawful influencing of the direction of a particular match.”

Broos later commented that he hoped investigations would lead to Bafana geting the chance of a replay against Ghana

“We deserve that,” he commented. “I saw players hurt and crying after the match. The odds were truly against us.”

In its argument, SAFA is expected to reference a previous case where Bafana Bafana’s match against Senegal had to be replayed due to poor officiating on the day.

“We were given a penalty against Senegal in 2016 and when we reviewed it, we could see it wasn’t a penalty. We were happy and prepared to play a replay with regards to that particular game,” Jordaan commented.
