If Bafana Bafana fail to beat Liberia tonight, Broos should be sacked

Hugo Broos will have very little cause for complaint if Bafana Bafana loses to Liberia tonight and he gets sacked as a result.

Bafana Bafana surrendered a two-goal lead to chalk up a disappointing 2-2 draw with Liberia at the weekend. It leaves them in a precarious position in their AFCON qualifying group. If South Africa fails to get the job done tonight, Hugo Broos should be sacked.

The final match in this AFCON qualifying group is against Morocco, a team that reached the 2022 World Cup semifinals. Yes, that tie is at home, but can you see Bafana getting a result in that one? We have our doubts.

Over-reliance on Foster already?

Burnley striker Lyle Foster has scored all three of South Africa’s goals in qualifying. It was fine to withdraw him on Friday, but Broos needs to find a way to motivate the rest of his attackers to get themselves on the score sheet in Monrovia. If they can’t, he’s failed in his duties.

Drawing with Liberia at home is a shambolic result

The Lone Stars had claimed just a solitary win in 17 years on the road in AFCON qualifying. Imagine Bafana hadn’t picked up that two-goal buffer? We’d be talking about a historic, unprecedented defeat to a team ranked 150th in the world. That’s a full 83 places below South Africa.

What can Broos change to secure a win for Bafana?

For starters, Innocent Maela should come back into the side at the expense of Aubrey Modiba at left-back. Also, Monnapule Saleng should start in Bongokuhle Hlongwane’s place. It’s bound to be another tense affair for Hugo Broos. Can he eke out a result? Kickoff is at 18:00 SA time.
