In fact, Broos admitted that it will be very difficult for Bafana Bafana to be among the top five countries to represent Africa at the finals.

And this is because Bafana Bafana are rebuilding the team with young players, according to Broos.

However, Broos said HE wants to go to Qatar, and he wants his players to adopt the same mentality going into the World Cup qualifiers in September.

“Let me be clear, I want to go to Qatar, let there be no misunderstanding. I would like to be at AFCON 2023, I would like to go to the World Cup in 2026, this is my ambition,” Broos told reporters.

“This is the ambition I want in my team and again, as you see for example now, qualification for the World Cup as an African country is extremely difficult.

There are 10 groups of four that makes 40 countries, and only five of them will be in Qatar,” he said.

Broos said European countries stand a good chance of qualifying compared to African countries, and his plea to the nation is that they shouldn’t be too disappointed if Bafana Bafana don’t qualify for the World Cup in Qatar.

“When you compare that with Europe for example, you have more chance to be there. But again, the ambition has to be to go to Qatar next year.

“But because we are rebuilding with a new young team, maybe it doesn’t happen so we don’t have to be disappointed,” added Broos.

Bafana Bafana get their FIFA World Cup qualifiers underway with a visit to Zimbabwe on 3 September before hosting Ghana at the FNB Stadium on 6 September.
