Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has named a 35-man provisional squad for the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying tie against Liberia in late March. Just ONE Kaizer Chiefs man has made the group while four Orlando Pirates stars are included.

South Africa will host Liberia on March 24th before traveling to Monrovia for the return leg four days later. Broos will trim this group to 23 players when he announces the final squad next week. It’s an exciting group, that’s for sure, with Broos picking a bunch of new attackers based on merit and stellar club performances here and abroad.

Exciting Bafana squad with an Orlando Pirates feel

Monnapule Saleng’s form in a Buccaneers jersey has been impossible to ignore, and the same can be said for the excellence of 21-year-old Sundowns striker Cassius Mailula. Pirates skipper Innocent Maela’s rock-solid consistency has been rewarded with a call-up, as has the talented Bucs centre back Nkosinathi Sibisi. Midfield general Miguel Timm also make the cut, so the spine of the Orlando Pirates side is apparent. Another interesting inclusion is that of Luke Le Roux, currently on the books of Varbergs BoIS in Sweden. It’s also good to see Burnley star Lyle Foster, once of Orlando Pirates, back in the mix for his country.
