Bafana Bafana boss Hugo Broos has said that it was difficult to ignore the recent exploits of Orlando Pirates man Monnapule Saleng.

The Buccaneers attacker has been named in the final 23-man squad for Bafana’s upcoming international friendly matches. The final squad was confirmed on Tuesday afternoon by Broos, who went on to explain why he opted to give the Pirates wide attacker a chance.

Bafana Bafana boss happy to have Saleng back

“What he did [in October] was amazing. Very strong on the right side, he scores goals,” Broos said.

“We know Saleng also from last season when he was playing with the Olympics [Cosafa Cup]. But then it was less with him, I didn’t see him anymore.

“Now, he is back again and you saw his qualities. He is fast and can take on a man on the wings and he can score. I think we have to give him a chance and can do it on that level.”

Saleng’s on fire

24-year-old Monnapule Saleng has scored two goals in just five PSL matches this term, although both of those came in the same game against Golden Arrows. In the MTN8, he was Pirates’ outstanding player with a brace in the semifinal against Sundowns and the match-winner in the final. FOODBALL 01: Benni McCarthy’s rabbit food diet from 2011

His three goals in the tournament were supplemented by an assist for Kermit Erasmus to open the scoring in the semifinal against Sundowns. He’s undoubtedly a man to watch in Saturday’s Carling Black Label Cup semifinal against Kaizer Chiefs.
