Hugo Broos’ side beat Ethiopia 3-1 in what was their third (of six) group stage matches on Saturday.

On the stroke of half-time, a free-kick from Bafana Bafana’s Teboho Mokoena found the back of the net with home ‘keeper Fasil Gebremichael credited with an own goal.

However, Ethiopia equalised in the 67th minute through Getaneh Kebede, but five minutes later Mothobi Mvala restored South Africa’s advantage.

Evidence Makgopa put the match beyond doubt when he added a third goal in second-half stoppage time.

Bafana Bafana went into the match on top of the group after a draw away to Zimbabwe and home win over Ghana.

They now have seven points at the halfway mark, but Ghana (two matches) and Ethiopia (three matches) on three points.

Zimbabwe currently bring up the rear on a single point, but have a match in hand.

Ghana will host Zimbabwe in a crucial clash at 18:00 on Saturday.

Only the top team in each of the 10 groups will move on to the next stage of qualification which will ultimately result in determining Africa’s five participants at next year’s tournament.

Bafana Bafana and Ethiopia will clash once again on Tuesday, 12 October at the FNB Stadium at 18:00.
