Bafana Bafana star Percy Tau has distanced himself from possibly being the team’s captain when Hugo Broos‘ men take on Uganda in June.

This is because current Bafana Bafana captain Thulani Hlatshwayo was excluded from the latest squad by Broos.

And the question on everyone’s lips is who the captain of Bafana Bafana will be in Broos’ first game in charge.

Tau is one of the few senior players in the latest Bafana Bafana squad which was announced last Saturday.

However, the Brighton & Hove Albion attacker feels there are other leaders that could do better than him in that role.

Tau said he still enjoys the supporting role, adding that both Ronwen Williams and Keagan Dolly will have to step up and guide the inexperienced players in the squad.

“I have never thought about it before,” Tau told reporters.

“I prefer the supporting role. Others will wear the armband but we will see if the coach wants me,” he said.

“I am one of the experienced players with Ronwen and Keagan. Before it used to be Andile (Jali), Thulani leading the team but now it’s different.

Tau also urged players such Teboho Mokoena, Sipho Mbule and Luther Singh to raise their hand and carry Bafana Bafana on their shoulders.

“We need to take responsibility but young ones like Teboho Mokoena, Luther Singh and Sipho Mbule will be challenged to this role but some of us enjoy being leaders,” added Tau.
