Coach Hugo Broos will NOT be in charge of Bafana Bafana for the 2021 COSAFA Cup tournament which is set to get underway on 6 July.

Coach Hugo Broos will NOT be in charge of Bafana Bafana for the 2021 COSAFA Cup tournament which is set to get underway on 6 July.

The South African Football Association (SAFA) has confirmed that Broos’ second assistant Helman Mkhalele will lead Bafana Bafana in Gqeberha.

According to CEO Tebogo Motlanthe, part of the agreement with Broos is that he will be excused from both the COSAFA Cup and CHAN tournaments.

“Coach Mkhalele will be coaching in the COSAFA Cup. This is a contractual agreement,” said Motlanthe to Daily Sun.

“Coach Broos believes in the empowerment of his assistants, and they are not just assistants but they are co-coaches.

“This is a contractual agreement to exclude him from COSAFA and the CHAN,” concluded Motlanthe.

SAFA previously allowed their coaches such as Shakes Mashaba, Gordon Igesund, and Stuart Baxter to take charge of the team both in minor and major tournaments.

The country’s FA made an exception in 2019 when David Notoane had to take his U23 team to the COSAFA Cup tournament in Durban as Bafana Bafana were preparing for the AFCON tournament.

This year’s COSAFA Cup tournament will take place between 6 July and 18 July at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.
