Bafana Bafana learn Cosafa Cup opponents, Hugo Broos excused

The 2022 Cosafa Cup draw was conducted on Tuesday, 14 June in Durban with defending champions Bafana Bafana learning their fate.

South Africa will join the annual regional tournament at the quarter-final stage alongside Senegal, Zambia, Namibia, Madagascar and Mozambique.

The tournament is divided into two groups – Group A and Group B – and the winners from each group will advance to the quarter-finals.

Angola, Comoros, Seychelles, and Botswana have all been drawn in Group A while Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius and Eswatini are in Group B.

Now, having been giving a bye in the group stages, Bafana Bafana will face Mozambique in the quarter-finals while Madagascar have been pitted against Namibia.

Zambia and Senegal will play Group A and B winners respectively for a place in the semi-finals.

Just like last year, Bafana Bafana will be without Hugo Broos whose contract with the South African Football Association (SAFA) excuses him from Cosafa Cup and Chan tournaments.

South Africa’s U23 coach David Notoane will be in charge of this Bafana Bafana team which is expected to comprise of players campaigning in the ABC Motsepe League.

This year’s tournament will be played from 5-17 July in Durban. Former Bafana Bafana players Brilliant Khuzwayo and Mark Fish are the ambassadors.
